E3

11 06 2010

With E3 not far away there will be many games to keep an eye on as well as the companies behind them. Star Wars: The Old Republic is a major game that I will be keeping an eye on as well as announcements from Microsoft. I must admit I am a bit of a Fable fan so my eyes will be glued to anything Lionhead Studios announces about Fable 3 or any other upcomming adventures they have planned. If anyone has a game that they reckon is worth checking out or announcements they are looking foward to feel free to leave a comment.

Fallout: New Vegas

10 05 2010

Pretty damn hyped for this game, loved Fallout 3 and it looks like New Vegas will be more of that great gameplay and large landscapes.

Check out the teaser trailer, must say though that the robot has certain similarities with Claptrap from Borderlands.

Modern Warfare Map Pack

7 04 2010

Modern-warfare-2-Stimulus-Package-So, Infinity Ward decided to release 5 maps for Modern Warfare 2, the Stimulus Package. Two of these five are from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Overgrown and Crash. Overgrown has a dry creek bed running through an unknown European town, and Crash is the downed helicopter in the middle eastern suburbs. The new three Salvage, Bailout and Storm are true to the settings of the game. Salvage takes place in a russian scrap yard, Bailout is in the streets of the U.S. and Storm is fittingly named as it is on a rainy brazilian factory complex.

These maps offer up much in the same of gameplay and the settings are just putting a new skin on the same old Call of Duty multiplayer. However, in saying that, if that same old Call of Duty experience is entertaining to you which it is to me, these maps offer up some new challenges in the way of having to learn the strategies to the new settings. Overgrown and Crash were included as fan favourites and help to flesh this quite expensive DLC out. The Stimulus Package is 1200 Microsoft points which roughly equates to 20 dollars, this is not a package for someone who was waiting for more content before they were to pick the controller up again and start playing. The price can only be justified by those who are still playing and who find the game, as is, interesting.

Modern-warfare-2-Stimulus-Package-There are no new Spec. Op missions included in the package as well as a lack of new upgrades for the multiplayer. This wasn’t really needed although many would argue it would be nice to have a few more mission sets for Spec. Ops. While I continue to enjoy Modern Warfare and the multiplayer, these maps are not meant for people who don’t enjoy or are passed enjoying what this game has to offer.

I would recommend this to people still playing but for those who are looking into it but are not liking what they have already experienced there is no way for you to justify the price therefore it is not for you. While not offering much in the way of new and expansive ideas the DLC builds on what Infinity Ward has made this games multiplayer to be and gives something new and old back to the community. The Stimulus Package DLC gets 3/5.

Torchlight

31 03 2010

Torchlight is a game I’ve had sitting around for a while now. This Diablo-esque, point and click, dungeon crawling adventure take the player through one massive dungeon. Torchlight brings many of the traditional RPG trappings one comes to expect, including a loot driven in game economy which lets the player gets to go through countless greens, blues, purples and oranges. Torchlight has an experienced team who worked on it with Runic Games heading the development of the game.

Torchlight gives you the choice between three characters to pick between. These being a ranger, melee and magic character all with their own mandatory pet of which is one of the best facets of this game. The pet can be a dog or cat which can be further customized during gameplay. Having played many loot based RPG’s one of the most annoying things is having your inventory full and nothing that can be done about it so far into a dungeon. The pet changes this as it acts as a second inventory as well as running to the vendor and selling everything it has with it.

The dungeon itself however one in number the contents are vast and expansive. The further you explore the dungeon the more the surroundings change as well as all the little nasties trying to make your life hell. The enemies not only change appearance according to the surroundings but also behaive different, as well as being harder to down.

Tochlight is an amazing game that lets the player experience some of the finest gameplay and visuals the RPG genre has to offer. There are countless hours of this game to experience and heaps of replayability to enjoy. Over all I give Torchlight 5/5.

The Men Who Stare at Goats

19 03 2010

The Men Who Stare at Goats is a comedy based on the novel by Jon Ronson and directed by Grant Heslov. This movie offers much in the way of entertainment and was funny in its satirical look at the new Earth army, America’s newest branch in the military. George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey all bring forward the story well with Clooney’s character providing the most laughs. Not knowing much about this movie going in to it had me wondering if I would like the style and humour. The movie itself had much the same stylings of Burn After Reading, which I enjoyed greatly. This movie doesn’t lean heavily on slapstick comedy, rather witty lines and a great story. The Story follows a reporter, Bob Wilton who after his marriage fails he jets off to Iraq; There he meets Lyn Cassady who then thrusts them both into the story of Bobs’ lifetime when he finds out that Lyn is actually part of a psychic branch of the U.S. Military. The Men Who Stare at Goats was a great film and while slow in points it still delivered a tremendous and humourous product.

Great way to leave

19 03 2010

Found an article on this while searching the web and when I went and looked at it i found it quite hilarious, check it out -http://www.farbs.org/Message.html. Mr. Jarrad quit his job at 2K games Australia using this quirky resignation. He has since gone on to make independent games, some of which can be found at http://www.farbs.org/games.html.

Alice In Wonderland

8 03 2010

The lastest box office release that has many people flocking to the cinemas again is Alice in Wonderland. Directed by Tim Burton this screen adaption of the novel, ‘Through the Looking Glass,’ seemed to have the burton-esque qualities many have come to know and expect from this veteran director. While myself having fond memories of the Disney animated movie released when I was younger made this movie fall short of its predecessor in comparison. In saying that, the movie itself was still great. Johnny Depp delivers an outstanding preformance as the Mad Hatter, while Mia Wasikowska delivers an unmatched preformance as Alice. Johnny Depp at times makes the Mad Hatter seem like Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. Mia seems to capture the innocence and strength of the character all the while being immersed in the rich story. The scenery created through computer generated graphics makes for an unbelievable setting to this age old tale. While during the film there seemed to be an over emphasis on the 3D rendering with obvious use of it when it was not required. Notable characters which are played perfectly by their voice actors are Stephen Fry playing the Cheshire Cat and Paul Whitehouse playing the March Hare. Fry captures the cunning and mischievous demeanor of the Cheshire Cat while Whitehouse delivers an utterly disturbed character with the right amount of crazy, which had me laughing. The movie had very few short commings which made for an overall enjoyable experience and one that I would tell everyone to go see for themselves.
